Luke Shaw: My best is yet to come for Manchester United

Luke Shaw accepts he is yet to produce the form to justify why Manchester United spent 27 million pounds on him, but believes his displays are improving after a slow start to his Old Trafford career.

Shaw became the most expensive teenager in world football when United signed him from Southampton in June.

The England international missed the beginning of the season because of a hamstring injury but has played in United's last three games, although the left-back was partly culpable for West Bromwich Albion's opener in Monday's 2-2 draw.

"I know I haven't been up to my full potential and I think maybe people can see that at the moment," Shaw told reporters. "They haven't seen the best of me yet.

"I am trying hard and it's about getting used to everything. When you come to a club like this it's never easy for a young player like me. But I'll get myself starting soon and put in good performances.

"I wouldn't say I've been horrendous but I know I can do much better. And I need to do better. I've come to Manchester United and I know what they need. I've been working hard and the performances will come."

Manager Louis van Gaal said in late August that the 19-year-old's dedication has made him "an example to the dressing room" after previously questioning the player's fitness, and the defender was thankful for the Dutchman's guidance.

United go into Sunday's match against Chelsea 10 points behind the league leaders, but Shaw said it is not a formality that Jose Mourinho's team will win the title, adding: "No, not yet. It's a long season so we'll have to see what happens. We're going to work hard this week and be ready for the challenge on Sunday. It's a massive test. They're flying at the moment."
