- Delaney: United's transfer trevails The England international was ruled out for 10 weeks after undergoing surgery on his left ankle in July and could return for the visit to Goodison Park on Oct. 5. He told BT Sport: "It is two more weeks with the boot on and then countdown after that." Carrick, who was sidelined just as Louis van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford, admitted it was the worst possible time to be absent as he hoped to impress the new manager. "It was terrible timing," he said. "I was going for my operation as he was walking through the door. I had a brief meeting with him for about a minute and then I had to go to hospital. It was a big blow, a terrible time as you are looking forward to the new season." The 33-year-old has made 358 appearances for United since he joined from Tottenham in 2006 and Darren Fletcher has been deputising for him in the centre of midfield. Carrick said Van Gaal has made a major impact with the United players, adding: "He has got a huge presence and a real aura about him and when he came into the room, everyone knew he was there. I don't know how you get that. Only certain people have that. He commands the respect of the room and the players."
