Claudio Bravo to contest Man City No. 1 spot with Ederson - sources

KAZAN, Russia -- Manchester City expect Claudio Bravo to stay at the club and battle with summer signing Ederson for the goalkeeper's jersey, despite the Chilean once again being left out of the national team during the Confederations Cup in Russia.

Bravo, Chile's first-choice keeper during their back-to-back Copa America triumphs in 2015 and 2016, was named on the bench for the 1-1 draw against Germany in Kazan on Thursday -- four days after being overlooked in favour of 36-year-old Universidad de Chile No. 1 Johnny Herrera in the Group B opener against Cameroon in Moscow.

Despite enduring a difficult first season at City following his arrival from Barcelona last August, Bravo had been able to hold onto his international position ahead of the Confederations Cup.

But after ending the season on the bench at City, Bravo has now suffered the same fate with Chile in Russia.

Before leaving for the Confederations Cup, Bravo told City manager Pep Guardiola that he was prepared to fight for his place and challenge Brazilian keeper Ederson for a place in the team next season.

And sources at City have told ESPN FC that they believe Bravo is committed to the task of battling the new arrival from Benfica for the first-team spot.

Bravo and Ederson are now the only two senior keepers on City's books following the departure of Willy Caballero. He is expected to sign for Chelsea as understudy to Thibaut Courtois after rejecting a one-year contract at City to move to Stamford Bridge.

And Angus Gunn, City's England under-21 goalkeeper, has also left the club, albeit temporarily, after completing a one-year loan move to Norwich City.

Any decision by Bravo to push for a move for the sake of his international ambitions would force City to recruit another senior goalkeeper, but as it stands, the club are planning to go into the new campaign with Ederson and Bravo as their two main keepers.
