John Stones and Raheem Sterling say Man City's defending must improve

John Stones and Raheem Sterling may have both scored goals as Manchester City rallied to beat Monaco 5-3 in the Champions League on Tuesday, but both lamented their side's defending.

Sterling provided City's opener in the first half, but Monaco were able to take the lead at half-time before a Sergio Aguero brace brought the hosts back level and Stones and Leroy Sane provided a cushion ahead of the second leg.

But City defender Stones said he was not pleased with a performance by the back line that allowed Monaco to score three times at the Etihad.

"Lot of goals," he told BT Sport. "The three goals we conceded from a personal point of view is something we need to work on but great team spirit, great desire and great goals from us as well."

But Stones was happy to make up for a leaky performance at the back by finding the goal that put City ahead for good in the 77th minute.

"I thought we created so much and could have had a few penalties as well," he said. "I thought I needed to make amends for what happened at other end so to get a goal on a personal level was delightful."

Sterling said Monaco gave City all they could handle, but he was satisfied with his side's resilience.

"It was good to be a part of. It was end-to-end stuff and Monaco gave us a tough game and pushed us all the way," he said. "We got the win and that's the most important thing today.

"It's always difficult to go down but the boys did really well. We played our football and stuck to our game and it worked out in the end. At the end of the day we need to tighten up at the back as well."

Goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who dived to his left to save Radamel Falcao's weak spot-kick, said: "Unbelievable. It was a crazy game. Fortunately we won this game.

"Fortunately for me, fortunately for the team I choose one side. We watch, we study a lot Falcao and the rest of the penalty-takers. I have been lucky today to choose the right side."

City boss Pep Guardiola labelled his side "lucky" on the night, although he was happy with the result..

He said: "Many things happen. A lot of things happen. In the moment we were lucky and we were stable mentally. It is not easy to play against a team [that are as] quick [as] they are, [as] good.

"We saw Monaco so we're going to have to score goals there. It will be almost impossible [to keep a clean sheet]. They're able to score two or three or four goals, but OK, it's a good result."
