Manchester City's Vincent Kompany 'out for weeks' with knee injury

DUSSELDORF, Germany -- Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany faces more "weeks" out injured after damaging medial knee ligaments, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

Kompany limped off in the first half of City's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday shortly after colliding with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

The 30-year-old suffered a head injury in the incident but Guardiola revealed that he has also damaged his knee and now faces another significant period out.

"He's injured for the next weeks," the City boss said ahead of the Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night. "For the next weeks he's injured. Fortunately nothing happened on the head. He had a little problem with the knee

"He could be out for weeks. He's sad and I'm sad. It's a long time he doesn't play."

Kompany has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons and has not completed 90 minutes for the club this season despite starting four matches.

He has suffered from persistent muscle injuries and has started just 38 of City's 109 games since December 2014.

The defender will travel to Barcelona on Wednesday for treatment with specialist Dr. Ramon Cugat, who treated him and Belgium teammate Kevin de Bruyne earlier in the season.

"I am not a doctor. Severe would be six months -- it is not that," Guardiola added when asked how long he would be out for. "I think maybe three or four weeks, but I don't know.

"He is in the best hands so he can recover as soon as possible. He [Cugat] will make the best treatment possible.

"The doctor told me [Kompany will be out] a few weeks. We'll see. It is ligaments."

Kompany missed the training session ahead of the trip to Germany but the rest of the squad took part, although midfielders Yaya Toure and Aleix Garcia are ineligible for the Champions League.
