Man City's Vincent Kompany ready for 'career-defining game' vs. Real Madrid

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany claims that the Champions League semifinal second leg clash against Real Madrid will be the "career-defining game" of his career.

Manuel Pellegrini's side held Real Madrid to a goalless draw at home on Tuesday, and will travel to Madrid for the second leg on Wednesday next week.

With Cristiano Ronaldo failing a late fitness test just before the game, it was up to the home side to sieze the advantage but the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva failed to find the back of the net.

Despite going into the return leg as the underdogs against Madrid, Kompany is confident of his team's chances, and has backed the strikers to score at the Bernabeu.

"Yeah, it's up there. It's a career-defining game." Kompany told The Mirror. "There's so much still at stake.

"If you're going to have a draw at home, which is not a bad thing against Real Madrid, then 0-0 is the best result.

"I still back my team to score over 180 minutes and I would not expect us not to be able to score one goal there. If we do manage to do it at the Bernabeu, then this tie will be very much alive."

Kompany's claims of getting the job done away from home in Europe are not unfounded, as City have scored in all but one of their five away fixtures this season, with only Juventus managing to shut them out.

He insists that the pressure will be on Madrid, who will be expected to attack and score in front of the home fans.

"If I was playing an away game and it was 0-0, it's an uncomfortable result," he said. "It's a pressurising result because you're at home, your fans are expecting you to go forward and score goals and that can leave gaps."

"We've proven against Paris Saint-Germain how dangerous we can be on the counter. Against Sevilla, how dangerous we can be on the counter. At Monchengladbach as well.

"Real are going to try to put us under pressure early doors, to try to get that goal, and the longer we're in the game, the more we get a chance."

While he keeps faith with his teammates, he knows that the probably return of Ronaldo could be a dangerous proposition for City, but remains undaunted by the task ahead.

"No, it's too early for disappointment," he said. "Not at all. I think what you want is to give yourself a chance and we've given ourselves a chance.

"Obviously they've got Ronaldo to come back, but we're looking now for a way to score a goal there and hopefully that will swing the balance."

The winners of this tie will face either Bayern Munich or Atletico Madrid in the May 28 final at the San Siro. Diego Simeone's charges sealed a 1-0 home win in the first leg over Bayern on Wednesday.
