Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini vows to win back title

Manuel Pellegrini has vowed to regain the Premier League title after winning his battle to remain as Manchester City manager.

The Chilean is planning his summer transfer business as he prepares to see out the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Pellegrini's future was plunged into doubt after a run of six defeats in eight games but City finished the season in second place with a comeback of six straight wins.

The manager has always said he has had the backing of the powerbrokers at the Etihad Stadium and met with chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak at the weekend.

Now the 61-year-old, who won the title in 2014, is aiming to bolster his squad as he tries to overhaul new champions Chelsea.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "I am sure we are going to return stronger next season so we are going to recover the title for the Etihad.

"The same way that our stadium is growing with the new stand, I think the club completely will grow.

"There's a lot of important things in our project that we must try to improve every year. I always have communication every week with the owners.

"I know exactly what they think -- they know what I think also. Every day we are talking also with Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano -- so we will see which is the best way to try to improve our squad and try to recover the title."

Kevin De Bruyne and Paul Pogba are two targets for City, while they are also expected to be interested if Liverpool do decide to sell Raheem Sterling.

Pellegrini said last week that City "do not need major surgery" and Yaya Toure's agent, who had said the midfielder was "90 percent certain" to leave, stated on Monday that the club thought he was "too important to let go."

Aleksandar Kolarov, who had been interested in a move to a Serie A club, is also likelier to remain after ending the season in the team at the Etihad Stadium.

City had started investigating other left-backs, but may now be able to concentrate their resources on other positions.
