Manchester City sweat on Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure fitness tests

Manchester City are waiting to discover if Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure will be fit to face Sunderland after both sat out their draw against Burnley.

Captain Kompany suffered a setback in his bid to recover from calf and hamstring problems as he missed a third consecutive game.

And manager Manuel Pellegrini decided not to gamble on the fitness of vice-captain Toure after the midfielder sustained a groin problem in the Boxing Day win over West Bromwich Albion.

Both are set to be assessed on Monday with Pellegrini, who had hoped Kompany would return against Burnley, admitting he is unsure if the centre-back can play on New Year's Day.

He said in a news conference: "We will see tomorrow [Monday] if he is fit for the next game. It is very difficult now to know. He has some problems still in his calf.

"Yaya Toure was not able to play today. It was a risk for him. The players that played were the players who were able to.

"Yaya felt a problem at the beginning of the last game against West Bromwich. He was not 100 percent so I think it was not good for him to play. It is a muscle injury in his groin."

Toure has scored five goals in his last eight games and Pellegrini believes that, as it is a minor injury, he could be fit to take on Gus Poyet's side.

He added: "We will see tomorrow. We hope that he will be because it was a lesser problem but after 48 hours [after the West Brom game] maybe it is too high a risk to repeat."

City are certain to be without midfielder Fernando, who will be suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Burnley, plus injured strikers Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko.

However, Stevan Jovetic, who had been sidelined by a hamstring injury, made his comeback as a substitute against the Clarets.
