Manuel Pellegrini ignoring Manchester City winning record

Manuel Pellegrini is ignoring the prospect of equalling a 105-year club record to concentrate on Manchester City's bid to retain the Premier League title.

City have won their last eight games in all competitions, one short of a club record first set in 1909, and the Chilean's side will have a place in the history books if they beat West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day.

But Pellegrini said: "For me it's just to try and be near to the top of the table. I didn't know about the record."

The 61-year-old does not expect captain Vincent Kompany, who has calf and hamstring injuries, to be fit for the Albion game.

"We will see during the week along with [Stevan] Jovetic whether they can be fit for Friday," he added. "It's difficult."

With Jovetic a doubt and both Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko definitely out, Pellegrini may have to ask James Milner to operate as an emergency striker again.

The England international played as a lone attacker in Saturday's 3-0 win over Crystal Palace but the midfielder used to be a forward in junior football.

"He told me," Pellegrini said. "I think Milner can play where he wants to. He is very important because he always gives what he has inside."

While City prospered without strikers against Palace, Pellegrini said he prefers to play with specialist forwards.

"I don't think it's a system we'll adopt in the future," he explained. "This team works very hard during the week so we can change our style of play. Normally it is better for me to play with one striker or maybe two strikers in some moments. So it's important to have the capacity to change the style of play in one week."

David Silva, who scored twice against Palace, praised Milner for his efforts leading the line against Palace.

The Spaniard said: "Milly always contributes to the team. He is a complete player. He is a great player, and I am sure he will give a lot to England in the future."
