Vincent Kompany signs new deal

Vincent Kompany has become the second major Manchester City player to sign a five-year contract in as many days after emulating David Silva by committing his future to the Premier League champions.

The City captain has agreed to stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2019, when he will have completed 11 years of service to the club.

Kompany said his new deal was "a statement of intent" that City want to carry on winning silverware and said they have achieved far more than he expected when he joined from Hamburg six years ago.

The Belgium international became the first City captain since Tony Book in 1968 to lead them to the league title when they became champions in 2012, and he skippered them to a second Premier League title and the Capital One Cup last season.

Kompany told City's official website: "When I arrived in 2008, I could never have dreamed that we could achieve what we have over the last six years but, for me, this is just the start of the journey.

"This team is stronger now than it's ever been. We have competition for places in every position and a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together.

"Lifting two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup have been four of the best days of my life but I believe that there are many more of these occasions ahead.

"There are so many new landmarks and records to chase and I hope signing this new contract is taken as a statement of intent that I want to keep fighting for trophies for this special club.

"We have a common goal and so much to look forward to: a family of clubs, the opening of City Football Academy, exciting players coming through our youth system -- why would I go anywhere else?"

Kompany, who was also a member of the City side that ended a 35-year wait for major silverware by winning the FA Cup in 2011, has scored 12 goals in 244 games for the club.

The 28-year-old is the fourth City player to sign a contract extension this summer, after Aleksandar Kolarov, Samir Nasri and Silva.

City have a policy of tying down their key players on long-term deals and Nasri, Silva and Kompany are all contracted until 2019, with Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero having already agreed to stay until 2017.
