Croatia probes City player abuse claim

The Croatian Football Federation will investigate claims of racism against Manchester City's under-21 side during a match against HNK Rijeka.

The Croatian Football Federation (CFF) has confirmed it will be looking into claims that Manchester City's Seko Fofana was racially abused during an under-21 match against HNK Rijeka.

Patrick Vieira took his elite development squad side off the pitch towards the end of the first of Tuesday night's friendly in Novigrad as Fofana alleged that he had been targeted by Rijeka players after being sent off in the friendly.

Key European club fixtures

French Ligue 1 -- Aug. 8
FA Community Shield: Manchester City vs. Arsenal -- Aug. 10
German Super Cup: Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich -- Aug. 13
English Premier League -- Aug. 16
Spanish Super Cup: Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid -- Aug. 19 and 22
Spanish La Liga/German Bundesliga -- Aug. 23
Italian Serie A -- Aug. 30

City manager Manuel Pellegrini backed Vieira's stance and City are considering making an official complaint to UEFA.

In a statement issued to Press Association Sport, the CFF revealed it is investigating the matter, despite Ranko Buketa, who was in charge of the Rijeka team on Tuesday, wholly denying the claims made by the City teenager.

"The Croatian Football Federation is in a process of gathering information regarding the alleged incident and if there are any decisions to be made we'll make it public on our website," the statement read. "CFF follows a strong 'no racism' policy so we take all accusations of racism very seriously. The fight against racism (and any sort of discrimination) is one of the key components of our president Davor Suker's program and that is why we will have a good look into this matter."

Seko Fofana was allegedly subjected to racial abuse by an opposition player.

It is not the first time City's players have been involved in such an incident.

CSKA Moscow were ordered by UEFA to close part of their stadium after midfielder Yaya Toure was racially abused during a Champions League match in October, 2013.

Porto were fined 16,700 pounds in April 2012 after their supporters directed racist chants at Toure and striker Mario Balotelli, who has since left the club, during a Europa League tie.

Youth-team striker Devante Cole, son of former Manchester United and Newcastle forward Andy, was racially abused by players and supporters during a UEFA Youth League match against Atletico Madrid in February of this year.

There has been no response so far from either UEFA or the Croatian Football Federation.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
