Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns returned to form with an excellent 3-1 away victory over AS Vita Club in their CAF Champions League Group C clash in Kinshasa on Wednesday.

Goals from Anthony Laffor, Yannick Zakri and Sibusiso Vilakazi completed a famous victory for Sundowns, who move to joint top of the pool with four points from their opening two games, level with Tunisian side Esperance.

Ethiopian side Saint George have two points, but fancied Vita Club have now suffered back-to-back defeats.

It was a momentous win for a Sundowns side that has looked tired in recent months and gave up their South African domestic league title to Bidvest Wits this season.

Zakri had an early chance well saved by Vita Club goalkeeper Nelson Lukong inside the opening 10 minutes, but the visitors took the lead midway through the first half. Tebogo Langerman floated a cross the back post and Laffor rose to head home.

That lead lasted just eight minutes though as Sidibe launched a thunderous long-range shot that had the beating of Downs goalkeeper Dennis Onyango.

Zakri was unlucky again when he breezed past two defenders, but his shot thundered off the woodwork and away to safety at the end of the first half.

The Ivorian was again influential as he picked out Percy Tau in the box, but the latter could not find a finish. Zakri did finally get the goal his play deserved when he picked his spot and fired home from the edge of the penalty area.

It was 3-1 with 12 minutes to play as Vilakazi showed excellent persistence to ride a tackle from a Vita Club defender and scuffed his shot into the back of the net.

Midfielder Ronald Chitiyo scored a brace of goals as Zimbabwe champions CAPS United defeated USM Alger 2-1 in Harare to collect their first victory of the pool stages. Chitiyo netted either side of a striker by Algerian Under-23 international Ayoub Abdellaoui for the visitors.

The victory means that just three points separates Group B leaders Zamalek of Egypt and Al Ahly Tripoli at the bottom with a third of the matches played.

Ernest Mbewe scored the only goal of the game as Zambian heavyweights Zanaco claimed a precious 1-0 win over Wydad Casablanca in Lusaka.

The 22-year-old midfielder netted after 13 minutes as Zanaco joined Al Ahly at the top of Group D on four points. Wydad are a point back and Coton Sport from Cameroon have yet to break their duck.
