Mohamed Sissoko: Ex-Liverpool midfielder to sign for Indonesian side Mitra Kukar

Mohamed Sissoko replaced Eidur Gudjohnsen as Pune's marquee player this season.
Mohamed Sissoko replaced Eidur Gudjohnsen as Pune's marquee player this season.

Indonesian side Mitra Kukar are close to completing the signing of Mali midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, just over a month after he was released by Serie B side Ternana.

The Super Liga outfit will become the ex-Liverpool and Juventus man's third club in less than six months after he parted ways with Indian side Pune City earlier in the season and then had a brief one-game stint in Italy.

The 32-year-old returns to the Far East for a second spell, having previously played 10 matches with Shanghai Shenhua in 2015, and joins African stars such as Michael Essien and Peter Odemwingie who have both recently moved to the Indonesian top flight.

According to Mitra's official website, Sissoko will join once he passes his medical and could be eligible for his new club's second league game against PSM at home, with Jafri Sastra's side having fallen to a 2-1 defeat in their opener against Barito Putera on Saturday.

Sissoko parted ways with Ternana last month after just 25 days with the Italian minnows, with club sporting director Danilo Pagni criticising the West African's attitude and respect for coach Fabio Liverani.

Mitra are Sissoko's eleventh club, with the midfielder -- nicknamed 'The Octopus' -- having been linked with a move to the Premier League, and Sunderland, earlier in the season.

The six-footer began his career with Auxerre before moving to Valencia in 2003, where he played his part in the team's La Liga, Uefa Cup and Super Cup treble in 2004.

He followed Rafael Benitez to Liverpool a year later, but despite winning another Super Cup in 2005 and the FA Cup a year later, his career stalled after a devastating eye injury in February 2006.

Sissoko, who represented Mali at four Nations Cups, then moved to Juventus in 2008 before switching to Paris Saint-Germain in 2011.

Despite representing two of Europe's giants, his stints in Turin and the French capital coincided with relatively fallow periods for both sides, although he did win the French title with PSG in 2013.

Spells with Fiorentina, Levante and in China followed before Sissoko joined Pune in October, after eight months out of the game.
