Malaysia Cup champions Selangor on top of PKNS in quarterfinal

Selangor overcame PKNS 4-3 in the first leg of their 2016 Malaysia Cup quarterfinal on Sunday at Shah Alam Stadium to move within sight of the last four.

The Red Giants, who lifted the trophy for the 33rd time last December, needed a late strike from Mauro Olivi to win a thrilling game against sister club, PKNS, currently in Malaysia's second tier.

Ex-Nigeria international Ugo Ukah opened the scoring for Selangor after just five minutes, and 18 minutes later, Hazwan Bakri extend the visitors' lead.

Just before the half hour, Juan Manuel Corbelli pulled a goal back for the hosts, only for R. Gopinathan to restore the two-goal advantage for Selangor seven minutes into the second half.

On the hour, PKNS scored again through Gonzalo Soto and the Malaysia Premier League team pulled level with 15 minutes remaining, with a goal from Gabriel Guerra.

With the first leg about to end all square, Olivi intervened with five minutes left to give Selangor a significant advantage in next month's second leg as they chase the only trophy still available to them.

In the evening's other tie between Premier League and Super League opponents, second tier Negeri Sembilan held Kedah to a goalless draw leaving all to play for in the second leg.

Kedah started strongly, with Thiago Augusto running through the middle. The Brazilian's low shot from outside the area took a deflection and had goalkeeper Kaharuddin Rahman scrambling down to his left to make a fine save.

It was one of five chances that the striker had in the first half. Two shots were pulled wide of the post and two headed opportunities were nodded into the arms of the grateful goalkeeper.

In an all-Super League clash, Felda United, currently second in the standings, came back from a goal down at the home of T-Team to draw 1-1.

In the evening's other tie, nine-man PDRM FA won 2-1 at Kelantan.

PDRM took a fourth minute lead through Singapore's Safuwan Baharudin, only for Indra Putra Mahayudin to equalise for the hosts 10 minutes later. Midway through the first half, Guilherme De Paula restored the Cops' lead.

But, despite second-half red cards to defender K. Reuben and goal-scorer Guilherme, the visitors hung on for an improbable victory.
