Malaysia forced to make do with JDT striker Safee Sali in WC qualifier

Malaysia will have to try to avenge a recent 6-0 defeat to Palestine without Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) striker Safee Sali.

Ong Kim Swee's side travel to Hebron on the West Bank on Nov. 13 in their next AFC World Cup qualifying match. Safee is unavailable because he must serve a one match suspension for collecting a second booking against Timor Leste in Dili on Oct. 13.

Also missing for the Group A game will be Perak midfielder Nasir Basharuddin, who has a wrist injury.

The JDT pair of S. Chanturu and Gary Steven Robbat have been drafted into the 23-man squad for the games against Palestine and United Arab Emirates.

Interim boss Ong says that Safee, who is in action this weekend in the AFC Cup final in Tajikistan, will be added for the second match.

Malaysia lost 6-0 at home to Palestine on June 16 before crashing to a record 10-0 defeat to UAE in Abu Dhabi on Sept. 3. As a result, Dollah Salleh stepped down as coach, with Ong taking over for the rest of the year.

After the away game against Palestine, Harimau Malaya host UAE on Nov. 17 at Shah Alam Stadium in a match played behind closed doors because of FIFA sanctions against Malaysia in the wake of crowd trouble at a Sept. 8 home qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

The Malaysians are fourth in Group A, with virtually no chance of advancing to the next phase of qualifying matches for Russia 2018 after only one victory in five matches.
