Former Fulham boss Meulensteen interested in Malaysia national job

Former Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen is looking to resurrect his coaching career in Malaysia.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the 51-year-old is one of the overseas applicants for the Malaysian national job, which is due to be filled by the end of the year.

Meulensteen was in charge of Fulham for 13 games in the 2013-2014 season, winning just three of those matches and losing nine before being sacked during a season in which the London club were relegated.

Previously, Meulensteen was in charge of Azhi Makhachkala for only 16 days before being fired, having previously served as an assistant at the Russian club to fellow Dutchman Guus Hiddink.

Before that, he was assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2007-13, and a youth and reserve team coach from 2001 to 2006.

More recently, Meulensteen has been employed in a developmental role in China, with youth and school players. He has also been a consultant for Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer.

The Beugen-born coach has never worked previously in Southeast Asia, although he was part of the Man United set-up when they toured Malaysia in 2009.

Meulensteen, who has had more success as assistant boss than head coach, hasn't managed a professional club since departing Fulham in February 2014, with Felix Magath taking over from him for the final three months of the 2013-14 season. Meulensteen had joined the West London club as a deputy to Martin Jol in November 2013.

Ong Kim Swee became interim Malaysia coach last month after Dollah Salleh resigned in the wake of a record 10-0 defeat to United Arab Emirates in an AFC World Cup qualifier on Sept. 3.

After a series of heavy defeats, the Malaysians won their first game of 2015 on Thursday, defeating Laos 3-1 in a friendly in Bangkok in a warm-up for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier away to Timor Leste.

Ong, the Malaysia U23 boss, has expressed his interest in becoming head coach of the senior team on a full-time basis.
