Toronto FC trades GK Clint Irwin to Colorado Rapids for 2019 draft pick

Toronto FC goalkeeper Clint Irwin has been traded back to the Colorado Rapids.

Toronto FC sent backup goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the Colorado Rapids on Friday for a second-round pick (39th overall) in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.

Toronto had announced in November it was not exercising its contract option on the 29-year-old Irwin.

The goalie joined Toronto from Colorado in a January 2016 trade. He lost his starting job to Alex Bono. With a salary of $221,300 last season, he became expendable.

Meanwhile, Brazilian striker Sergio Santos has signed with the Philadelphia Union, the team announced Friday.

Santos recently told a media outlet in Chile that he intended to join the Union.

Philadelphia used targeted allocation money to get the deal done but didn't release the amount of the transfer fee.

The 24-year-old Santos scored nine goals for Chilean club Audax Italiano this season. He has 19 goals in 74 appearances (42 starts) over five seasons with the club.

"Sergio is a young forward with potential and we are pleased to complete his signing," Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement. "When we met with him in Chile, it became apparent that he is a good fit for our club both as a player and as a person.

"He took an unconventional route going to Chile on his own at age 19, but we have observed rapid improvement and development at Audax, and believe he is ready for this next step. We next look forward to integrating him as quickly as possible with the team at the start of preseason."

Information from Reuters and the Associated Press was used in this story.
