Seattle Sounders sign Jordan Morris to lucrative five-year extension - sources

Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris has signed a five-year deal to remain with the team, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC on Thursday.

According to The Athletic, who were the first to report the news, the contract will average around $1 million per season and will be guaranteedĀ for the first three years, with ESPN sources describing the first two years of the deal as "team friendly."

Morris missed the entire 2018 campaign because of a torn ACL in his right knee. He suffered the injury during the Sounders' round-of-16 CONCACAF Champions League matchup against Salvadoran side Santa Tecla on Feb. 22.

Morris, 24, is expected to be ready for the start of the 2019 season.

Morris, a Seattle native, won 2016 MLS Rookie of the Year honors when he scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 34 games. But he struggled in 2017 when he had just three goals and one assist in 23 games while being hindered by ankle and hamstring injuries.

The former Stanford star also has made 25 appearances for the United States, scoring five goals and one assist.

Reuters and ESPN FC's U.S. correspondent Jeff Carlisle contributed to this report.
