Major League Soccer and Liga MX discussing champions match - sources

MLS and Liga MX are in discussions to have their respective champions face each other in an annual match, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.

The Washington Post was the first to report the news.

One league source stated that the details for the match have not been finalized but that it would take place some time during 2018, most likely in late summer.

The Post reported that the game would likely be held at BMO Field, home of current MLS champions Toronto FC.

The discussions mark the latest attempt by the two leagues to see their respective teams square off against each other. Such matches have been a regular feature of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Between 2007 and 2010, teams from the two leagues faced one another in what was called the SuperLiga, with Mexican sides prevailing in three out of the four years the tournament was contested.

The New England Revolution was the only MLS team to win the title, doing so in 2008.
