D.C. United claiming Veron highlight of Stage 2 in MLS Re-Entry Draft

After two-plus seasons with the New York Red Bulls, Gonzalo Veron was claimed by D.C. United in the Re-Entry Draft.

Three players were claimed in Stage 2 of MLS' Re-Entry Draft on Thursday, none bigger than former New York Red Bulls attacker Gonzalo Veron being picked up by D.C. United.

The two teams in Los Angeles completed the days' dealings, with the Galaxy taking veteran midfielder Servando Carrasco from Orlando City, and LAFC acquiring midfielder Calum Mallace of Seattle. Major League Soccer rules dictate that offers must be made to the three by their new clubs.

Twenty-seven-year-old Veron joined the Red Bulls in 2015 on a designated player contract, but failed to cement a place in Jesse Marsch's side. In two-plus seasons, the Argentine made just 13 starts across all competitions.

However, the former San Lorenzo standout saw his most productive year yet in 2017, when he registered six goals and three assists. Veron's growth could continue in a revamped D.C. attack that could potentially see playmaker Luciano Acosta surrounded by Veron and U.S. international Paul Arriola.

Carrasco, 29, made 62 appearances in three seasons in Orlando, the most at any one club in his seven-year MLS career. The Galaxy will be the holding midfielder's sixth club in the past five seasons.

Mallace joins LAFC from Seattle after the Sounders traded for the 27-year-old in August, although he never made a first-team appearance for the club. After being selected 20th overall in the 2012 SuperDraft by the Montreal Impact, the Minnesota native made 80 appearances in five-plus seasons with the Quebec club.
