Vancouver Whitecaps' Sheanon Williams suspended after arrest

Vancouver Whitecaps defender Sheanon Williams has been suspended in the wake of his arrest on assault charges on Tuesday, MLS has announced.

Williams, a 27-year-old former United States youth international, was taken into custody after an alleged domestic incident and has been banned indefinitely pending league and Vancouver police investigations into the matter, MLS confirmed in a statement on Friday.

"Major League Soccer will remain in close communication with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Union during this investigation," the release stated.

Williams, who joined Vancouver from the Houston Dynamo in January, will undergo an evaluation by the league's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program doctors, per MLS policy.

MLS will then re-evaluate Williams' status after the SABH's assessment and the league's internal investigation is complete.

The Boston native and former North Carolina star has played 14 matches over all competitions this season for the Whitecaps, providing one assist.
