San Diego fans gather 100,000 signatures to lure MLS franchise

A group hoping to attract a Major League Soccer team to San Diego says it has gathered more than 100,000 signatures on a petition in just two weeks.

If 71,646 signatures are verified by the Registrar of Voters, the proposal will be brought before the City Council to either approve the project or submit it to voters.

The bid is part of a $1 billion development project at the Qualcomm Stadium site. The project would include a $200 million soccer stadium as well as residential and commercial development. The plan was proposed shortly after the Chargers announced in January that they are moving to Los Angeles.

The group has proposed sharing the stadium with San Diego State's football team, but the university has proposed a competing plan.
