Impact add Chris Duvall after losing Donny Toia in MLS expansion draft

The Montreal Impact lost defender Donny Toia with the first pick of the MLS expansion draft on Tuesday, but picked up Chris Duvall as a replacement hours later.

After Atlanta United selected Toia in the draft, Minnesota United picked Duvall from the Red Bulls, only to later trade him and allocation money to Montreal for winger Johan Venegas, a Costa Rica international who made 32 appearances for the Impact last season.

Later in the draft, Atlanta selected Mikey Ambrose of Orlando City, but the Lions replaced him by acquiring Toia in exchange for the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

Atlanta also selected two goalkeepers -- Toronto FC's Clint Irwin and Sporting Kansas City's Alec Kann -- despite being linked to a move for U.S. international Brad Guzan.

However, Toronto later reacquired Irwin from Atlanta in exchange for defender Mark Bloom and allocation money.

Minnesota's picks were a little more attack-minded, as they selected two midfielders -- Collen Warner of the Houston Dynamo and Mohammed Saeid of Columbus Crew SC -- and the only forward taken in New England's Femi Hollinger-Janzen.

Warner was taken in an expansion draft for the second time after also being picked by Montreal in 2011.

Atlanta also selected defender Zach Loyd of FC Dallas, while Minnesota added Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.

MLS teams were allowed to protect 11 players from being selected in the draft, leaving the rest available. When one player was selected from a certain team, the rest of that teams' players were taken off the board.

The teams that lost a player received allocation money as compensation.

In another trade on Tuesday, the Vancouver Whitecaps acquired veteran right back Sheanon Williams from Houston in exchange for general allocation money.
