Oscar Pareja was named MLS Coach of the Year on Thursday after leading FC Dallas to the club's most successful season.

Pareja won with an average of 34 percent of the vote, barely edging out Colorado's Pablo Mastroeni, who finished just under 33 percent.

The Colombian won both the player and media vote, while Mastroeni led among club management. New York City FC's Patrick Vieira was third with nearly 16 percent of the vote.

Dallas claimed the Supporters' Shield for the best regular season record while becoming the first MLS club to earn 60 points in two straight years, though the season ended with a playoff defeat to Seattle.

FCD also won the U.S. Open Cup in 2016 under Pareja, who completed his third season with the team. Under his leadership, Dallas has focused on developing Homegrown players, and it's nine in the first team is the most in MLS.

Pareja thanked his staff in accepting the award.

"I say this from the bottom of my heart: this is an award that belongs to the coaching staff. It shouldn't be called Coach of the Year, it should be called Coaching Staff of the Year because there are many people involved in the work," Pareja said in a club statement. "I'm blessed to have this group of coaches and staff."

Pareja is the second FC Dallas boss to win the award after Schellas Hyndman led the club to the MLS Cup final in 2010.
