East-leading NYCFC beat LA Galaxy as Toronto FC wins to keep pace

David Villa scored an early goal and New York City FC held off the LA Galaxy to win 1-0 at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

LA keeper Clement Diop got a piece of Ronald Matarrita's shot, but it still fell for Villa to score from close range in the sixth minute.

Villa nearly added a second goal in the first half but Diop stretched to deny him with a good save.

NYCFC keeper Josh Saunders was called into action before halftime to push away Nigel de Jong's bicycle kick.

The Galaxy saw their nine-game unbeaten streak end as they could not find an equalizer in the second half as Robbie Keane's 71st-minute header was off target and Jelle van Damme's shot flashed past the post on 82 minutes.

The game was the first in MLS between former England teammates Frank Lampard of Eastern Conference-leading NYCFC and LA's Steven Gerrard, who both joined the league last season.

Sebastian Giovinco scored his MLS-leading 16th goal and Toronto FC extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

Giovinco, who has eight goals in his past six matches, slipped behind the defense in the 18th minute, set up by Delgado's long feed on a counterattack, and blasted a left-footed shot off the far post and in.

Philadelphia's Ken Tribbett levelled the score six minutes later, but Drew Moor gave Toronto a 2-1 lead in the 30th minute.

Michael Bradley dropped a free kick, after a foul by Fabio Alves on Marco Delgado, into the center of the box for Moor's diving header to the bottom-right corner.

Jozy Altidore shielded a defender, then eluded two more and poked a right footer past goalkeeper Andre Blake to double the advantage in the 44th minute with his fourth goal in his past five games.

Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain scored and Columbus Crew SC beat the New England Revolution 2-0 to snap a 10-game winless streak.

Finlay tapped home a right-footer from inside the six-yard box in the eighth minute. Hector Jimenez started a counterattack with a long feed to a streaking Justin Meram, who beat a defender and then played a left-footed cross to Finlay for a 1-0 lead.

It was fourth goal of the season for Finlay, who scored 23 in 2014 and 2015 combined.

Higuain blasted a shot, from near the spot, into the net in the 49th minute. Ola Kamara had a takeaway from London Woodberry on the left flank, and then dropped a sliding feed between two defenders to a streaking Higuain.

New England has lost four in a row.

Luis Solignac, David Accam and Matt Polster scored to help the Chicago Fire win on the road for the first time in more than two years, 3-0 over the Montreal Impact.

The last-place Fire hadn't won on the road since a 5-1 victory in San Jose on July 23, 2014.

Chicago opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Accam raced upfield after a Montreal corner and fed Solignac on the left side for his fourth goal of the season.

The Fire stuck on another counter in the 73rd when Michael de Leeuw slipped a pass to Arturo Alvarez for a shot that went off Accam and rolled slowly over the goal line. Polster scored from the left side in the 89th minute.

Jamison Olave scored in the 78th minute and Nick Rimando had his fourth shutout of the season as Real Salt Lake beat FC Dallas 1-0.

Olave blasted a half-volley into the top of the net from just right of the spot. Moments after Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz made diving save of a shot by Joao Plata, Javier Morales played a cross into the area. Aubrey David attempted to clear with a header, but Olave trapped it with his chest and blasted a right footer for his second goal of the year.

Rimando made two saves for Salt Lake. FC Dallas had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Benny Feilhaber scored and assisted on Jacob Peterson's goal in Sporting Kansas City's 2-0 victory over Vancouver.

Peterson redirected a shot by Nuno Coelho -- off a corner by Feilhaber -- into the net from the center of the six-yard box in the 39th minute.

After Peterson drew a foul on Fraser Aird, Feilhaber's first penalty kick was stopped, but goalkeeper David Ousted was called for being off his line. Feilhaber converted the retake to give Sporting a 2-0 lead in the 64th.

Kansas City's Alec Kann made two saves for his second-career shutout in six starts.

The Whitecaps have lost four games in a row and are winless in their last six.

Sporting snapped an 11-game winless streak on the road.

Tim Howard achieved his fourth shutout in eight games as Colorado drew with Orlando City 0-0.

Howard, who had played in the English Premier League since 2003 before joining the Rapids in July, made two saves.

Colorado is unbeaten in its last three matches and has just one loss since April 9.

It was just the third shutout this season for Orlando.
