New York City FC extend unbeaten streak to five games with TFC draw

Kwadwo Poku scored a fine goal to help New York City FC draw 1-1 with Toronto FC on Wednesday night.

Poku opened the scoring in the 16th minute for NYCFC as the second-year New York team extended its club-record unbeaten streak to five games.

Will Johnson scored his 27th goal in 200 MLS games to equalise for Toronto in the 42nd minute.

Toronto star Sebastian Giovinco was involved in the buildup but did not get an assist, ending his streak of being involved in consecutive TFC goals at an MLS-record high of 13 (scoring eight and assisting on the other five).

In Wednesday's other match, Mike Grella scored early in the second half to hand the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire.

Luis Robles posted his second shutout of the season in making his MLS record-tying 118th consecutive start.

Grella scored in the 58th minute after Lloyd Sam forced Chicago defender Jonathan Campbell to make a weak back pass toward his goal. Bradley Wright-Phillips intercepted the ball, laid off a pass to Lloyd, who found Grella bursting through the center.

After a 1-6 start, the Red Bulls are 3-1-1. Chicago has three straight losses and is winless in six games.

There were two good scoring chances in the first half, and they came minutes apart.

Chicago forward David Accam banged a 35-yard shot off the crossbar in the 30th minute, while Wright-Phillips send a shot wide two minutes later.

New York's Sam and Connor Lade were knocked off the ball in the box in the opening minutes but referee Robert Sibiga saw nothing wrong with the plays.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Earthquakes defeated La Liga side Real Sociedad 2-1 in a friendly, Chris Wondolowski scoring twice for the hosts after Alberto De la Bella's first-half opener.
