Gideon Baah joins New York Red Bulls from Finland's HJK Helsinki

Central defender Gideon Baah will join the New York Red Bulls from Finland's HJK Helsinki for the upcoming 2016 Major League Soccer season, the team announced Tuesday.

Baah, 24, is a Ghana international who has played in both Champions League qualifying and the Europa League and is expected to help offset the loss Matt Miazga, who was bought by Chelsea during the winter transfer window.

Red Bulls' sporting director Ali Curtis told NewYorkRedBulls.com that Baah has all the characteristics the club were looking for in a central defender and that they were eager to get him into training.

Baah's Finnish League career includes 70 appearances for HJK Helsinki and FC Honka, where he scored four goals and added seven assists.

MLS kicks off its season on March 6, when the Red Bulls will host Michael Bradley and Toronto FC.
