Colorado Rapids deal midfielder Marcelo Sarvas to D.C. United

The Colorado Rapids sent midfielder Marcelo Sarvas to D.C. United on Monday in exchange for targeted allocation money.

Sarvas, 34, played in 25 games for the Rapids last season after spending the three previous years with the LA Galaxy, where he won two MLS Cups.

He scored twice after missing the beginning of the season following knee surgery.

"Marcelo brings MLS experience and a veteran presence to our group," said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper. "He is a tenacious player who has been among the top central midfielders in the league in recent years, and we welcome him to our family."

The Rapids, who also acquired a 2018 draft pick in the deal, have been stockpiling allocation money since they traded away the No. 2 pick in the MLS SuperDraft last month.

Also on Monday, Colorado signed Albania international Shkelzen Gashi from FC Basel. He joins Kevin Doyle as the club's designated players.

The club still has one DP spot remaining, as well as the top allocation ranking that would allow them to sign a United States national team player such as Tim Howard, with sources saying the club and goalkeeper have a mutual interest.

Colorado has also hit roadblocks in its attempt to sign Mexico international Alan Pulido on loan.
