NYCFC gives goalkeeper Josh Saunders contract extension

New York City FC has re-signed goalkeeper Josh Saunders to a multi-year contract extension, the latest in a number of re-ups around MLS this week.

Saunders started 33 games and was a bright spot in a difficult year for NYCFC, which missed the playoffs in their inaugural season.

"Retaining Josh was always part of our offseason plans," NYCFC director Claudio Reyna said in a statement. "He is a tremendous leader and displays all of the personal and professional qualities we look for in a New York City FC player. He had a great season last year and clearly has a special relationship with our supporters."

The 34-year-old led MLS with 124 saves and the club named him its top defensive player.

"I love playing for this club", Saunders said. "It's a great honor for me and I'm definitely looking forward to playing in front of our fans again next season."

On Wednesday, the Houston Dynamo re-signed midfielders Ricardo Clark and Boniek Garcia and defender Sheanon Williams to new deals.

They also signed goalkeeper Calle Brown from the USL's Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Thursday.

The New England Revolution also signed defender Chris Tierney to a new, multi-year contract, while the Portland Timbers announced new deals with midfielders Ben Zemanski and Nick Besler and defender Andy Thoma.

Also on Thursday, only two players were selected in the second round of the Re-Entry Draft.

Orlando City selected defender Kevin Alston, formerly of the New England Revolution, while the Timbers picked former Dynamo center-back Jermaine Taylor.

The teams now have a week to make an offer to Alston and Taylor before they become available to all MLS clubs.
