The 20th MLS season is now behind us, with the Portland Timbers becoming the first Cascadia team to win MLS Cup. It was a highly entertaining match for a lot of the right reasons and a few of the wrong ones.
A botched call from a linesman directly led to the winning goal, and some exciting goal-line scrambles were a few of the highlights. That being said, 2015 MLS Cup will mostly be remembered for a couple of key goalkeeping errors. Given these two high-profile mistakes, I have been asked several times in the week after the final about the state of goalkeeping in MLS.
The bottom line is that there's been a dip in MLS goalkeeping in the past several years, though many factors come into play when examining the position and its current standing, including the impact of rapid league expansion, overseas signings, veterans retiring and beyond.
