Earthquakes stay hot to beat D.C. while Didier Drogba debuts in Impact's loss

Chris Wondolowski scored his 12th goal of the season four minutes into the game and the San Jose Earthquakes beat Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United 2-0 on Saturday.

Coming off a 5-0 win at Sporting Kansas City, the Earthquakes grabbed the lead when Fatai Alashe punched a pass to the right side of the goal box and Wondolowski was able to turn on the ball and right-foot a shot into the bottom of the far corner.

Shea Salinas added his second goal of the year in the 52nd minute.

San Jose had a six-game winless streak in July and is clawing its way back into position to claim one of the Western Conference's six playoff sports.

United had won three of its previous four games.

Sebastien Le Toux scored in the 78th minute and the Philadelphia Union beat Montreal 1-0 to spoil Didier Drogba's debut for the Impact.

Drogba, the former Chelsea star, went into the game to a standing ovation in the 59th minute, but he was unable to provide the spark for Montreal.

On the goal, Sapong lofted a pass to Eric Ayuk, whose shot was redirected in front by Le Toux for his sixth goal of the season.

Philadelphia ended a five-game winless streak.

Cristian Techera scored in the 32nd minute in the Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 victory over FC Dallas.

Techera back-heeled in a pass from Kekuta Manneh while being sandwiched by goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez and defender Je-Vaughn Watson. The Uruguayan midfielder has three goals in three games.

The Whitecaps regained first place in the Western Conference, moving two points ahead of idle Los Angeles. Vancouver has won four of its last five games.

Javier Morales and Sebastian Jaime scored early goals and Real Salt Lake held on to beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0.

Morales opened the scoring in the 12th minute, converting from the spot after the Sounders' Roman Torres was charged with a hand ball in the penalty area.

Luke Mulholland's 30-yard rocket off the crossbar in the 19th minute rebounded to Jaime, who headed it home.

Real Salt Lake moved within three points of the Sounders for the sixth and final playoff position in the Western Conference.

In the 44th minute, Kyle Beckerman surpassed Joe Cannon (30,731) for fourth place in career MLS minutes. Teammate Nick Rimando, who recorded his seventh shutout of the season, is the leader in minutes played.

Jack McInerney scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute in his home debut and the Columbus Crew rallied twice to beat Sporting Kansas City 3-2.

Marcel de Jong opened the scoring in the 14th minute for Sporting and Ethan Finlay answered for the Crew in the 35th minute.

Graham Zusi gave Sporting a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute with a right-footed blast from the top left corner of the 18-yard box.

Tony Tchani tied it for the Crew in the 80th minute, finishing Tyson Wahl's glancing header.

On the winner, Michael Parkhurst sent a long ball to Federico Higuain, who forced goalkeeper Tim Melia to make a diving save that deflected to McInerney.

The open tap-in was McInerney's 37th career goal. He is the second youngest MLS player to reach that mark behind the Crew's Stern John.

Jozy Altidore scored two late goals after Sebastian Giovinco, Marky Delgado and Justin Morrow scored in Toronto FC's 5-0 victory over nine-man Orlando City.

Toronto scored all five goals in the second half after Rafael Ramos was sent off for a dangerous tackle in the 36th minute.

Delgardo opened the scoring in first minute after the break, Giovinco added his 17th of the season on a free kick in the 57th, and Morrow connected in the 71st.

After Adrian Winter was also sent off for a second yellow card, Altidore scored his first on a penalty in the 83rd and completed the rout in the 85th with his ninth of the season.

Dillon Serna scored 49 seconds into the match and the Colorado Rapids beat the Chicago Fire 1-0 to snap a three-game losing streak.

Gabriel Torres took a long pass from Kevin Doyle and raced into the box, where he found Serna with a short cross for the goal.

The Rapids won at Chicago for the first time since 2004, but remain in last place in the Western Conference.

The Fire managed 20 shots, including a shot by Gilberto that hit the right post in stoppage time, but just four were on target. They are last place in Eastern Conference, but are only five points out of the final playoff spot.
