Montreal Impact confirm negotiations with Didier Drogba

The Montreal Impact are engaged in talks with former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, the MLS franchise has confirmed.

Sources confirmed last week that several teams were in the mix to land Drogba, 37, with the Chicago Fire making the strongest push, and one source saying the Fire were prepared to offer Drogba an 18-month contract worth around $2.5 million per year.

According to TSN, despite the Fire having priority to sign the Ivorian, the Impact are his top choice should a move to MLS materialise.

"I personally spoke to Didier. The ball is now in his camp. This is now beyond our control," said Impact president Joey Saputo, in a radio interview on Monday.

"We're doing everything we can to bring Drogba to Montreal. I know that the Fire is also in discussion with him," he added.

"We'll see what happens. I hope we will be lucky and he will decide to continue his career here."

"I think he can help us on many levels. It would fit perfectly with us. In addition, we are in a francophone market."

Drogba said earlier in the day that an offer from Italian giants Inter Milan could just tempt him to stay in Europe rather than continue his career in the United States.

"Inter are a great club and certainly if they were to contact me I would love to listen to what they have to offer, but at the moment my only negotiations are with an MLS club." Drogba told fcinter1908.it.

"As far as Inter are concerned, it could become a definite option if they were to be interested."
