David Ousted saved two penalty kicks, as the Vancouver Whitecaps held off the 10-man New York Red Bulls for a 2-1 victory on Saturday night.
Bradley Wright-Phillips took the penalty kicks for the Red Bulls in the fifth and the 65th minutes -- and both went waist high and to Ousted's right.
Kekuta Manneh opened the scoring with a close-range goal in the 15th minute, and Kianz Froese added another for the Whitecaps with a breakaway in the 77th.
Anatole Abang pulled New York back within one in the 82nd, but Ousted made his most difficult save of the match a minute later, diving and deflecting Manolo Sanchez's low-skipping shot out of play.
Vancouver moved into a first-place tie with Seattle in the Western Conference.
Sacha Kljestan picked up the red card in the 11th when he elbowed and tripped Kendall Waston.
The Red Bulls lost their fourth league match in a row.
Earlier in the day, Matias Perez Garcia set up Sanna Nyassi's first-half goal, and then scored in the second half to help the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Seattle Sounders.
Nyassi's goal, coming midway through the 28th minute, was his second of the year. Garcia scored his first of the season in the 73rd minute.
David Bingham recorded his fifth shutout for the Earthquakes, who halted a three-game winless streak. It was their first victory since a 2-0 win over Columbus on May 16.
"It was a good week for us with the U.S. Open Cup win, then coming to a tough place and getting the full three points," Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear said.
"We're kind of on the outside looking in as far as the playoff picture goes. It's good to get this win and start catching up on some teams."
The MLS-leading Sounders were without four players who had accounted for 18 of their league-high 23 goals.
Clint Dempsey (seven goals) served the first game of a three-game suspension handed down Friday, the result of an animated dispute with a referee in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to rival Portland in the U.S. Open Cup. Forward Obafemi Martins (seven goals) sustained a groin injury in that same game and will be out for three to six weeks. Forward Chad Barrett (three) also was out injured, and defender Leo Gonzalez (one) was not on the line-up card.
Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said several of his players were tired. A few played all 120 minutes of Tuesday's extra-time Open Cup game.
"I think for us, you need a full gas tank to play well, and sometimes, when you play on half a gas tank, it makes it a little tougher," Schmid said.
"We were around the goal, we were there, and we were hitting crosses. Guys were just missing on crosses. Our quality in the final third wasn't as sharp as it needed to be. I think that's more fatigue-related than personnel-related."
David Villa scored twice to lead expansion side New York City FC to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC, halting Toronto's unbeaten streak at five games.
Villa converted a penalty shot in the eighth minute after Benoit Cheyrou was whistled for a hand ball in the box.
Villa got his second of the night when New York City FC pounced on a soft pass from Toronto goalkeeper Chris Konopka to defender Eriq Zavaleta.
Toronto coach Greg Vanney said his star striker Sebastian Giovinco was battered and bruised after the loss.
"He's got scratches all over him, he's been kicked a number of times, he's trying to make a quick run in transition and boom, he's getting hit," Vanney said.
"If that's the template, we're going to need the officiating to take care of the players who people come to watch. This league is supposed to be about that."
Giovinco left the locker room before reporters were allowed in the room. Toronto captain Michael Bradley said his team couldn't use New York's tactics as an excuse.
"If we're good enough in what we want to do, and sharp enough, then I don't think we're talking about that," Bradley said.
Toronto FC honored Dwayne De Rosario before the game. The 37-year-old De Rosario recently ended his 18-year pro career.
In Montreal, Donny Toia scored his first Major League Soccer goal, leading the Montreal Impact to a 2-0 victory over Orlando City.
Dominic Oduro also scored in stoppage time for the Impact, who have won five of their last seven matches, including four in a row at home.
Expansion team Orlando City -- who earned a 2-2 draw in Montreal in their first meeting in March -- lost a five-game unbeaten run.
Toia, a right back obtained from the now defunct Chivas USA, was at the near post to lunge forward and head Marco Donadel's corner kick under the cross bar in the 36th minute.
The goal came three minutes after Orlando City goalie Tally Hall made a spectacular diving save on a low Ignacio Piatti drive from the edge of the area.
Gyasi Zardes notched up a goal and two assists, as the LA Galaxy beat the Philadelphia Union in the only league meeting between the teams this season.
Baggio Husidic opened the scoring with a putback in the 23rd minute after Zardes' shot rebounded squarely off the post.
The Galaxy doubled their lead in the 35th when Zardes cut a cross back to Juninho, who blasted home a left-footed shot.
Robbie Keane delivered a wide cross past four defenders to assist Zardes in the 56th minute.
C.J. Sapong put the Union on the board in the 58th minute with a turnaround blast.
Maximiliano Urruti and Gaston Fernandez scored to lift the Portland Timbers to a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo.
The Timbers opened the scoring in the 34th minute, when Urruti headed a free kick by Jorge Villafana into the upper right corner for his third goal of the season. For Villafana, it was his third assist of the season, and his second consecutive game with an assist. That makes him the first Portland defender to earn assists in consecutive games since the team joined MLS in 2011.
Fernandez added his goal in the 60th minute off of a penalty kick. A Timbers corner kick landed at the feet of Rodney Wallace and while attempting a shot, referee Baldomero Toledo judged the Portland midfielder was fouled and awarded the penalty. Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric dove the wrong way as Fernandez placed a solid shot into the upper right corner for his second goal of the season.
