Montreal Impact interested as Seattle Sounders waive Kenny Cooper

The Seattle Sounders waived Kenny Cooper on Thursday, a day after the Montreal Impact expressed interest in the veteran striker.

Cooper scored three goals in 22 MLS games last season, and was also named Player of the Tournament after leading the Sounders to the U.S. Open Cup title.

General manager Garth Lagerway told reporters that Cooper's contract didn't fit in Seattle's framework and there was no trade market available.

According to the MLS players union salary report from October 2014, Cooper made $265,625 in guaranteed compensation.

Though Copper is eligible for the Waiver Draft, Montreal Impact coach Frank Klopas said on Wednesday that his team could be interested in signing the 30-year-old.

"We have an interest," Klopas said. "We need forward depth. He knows the league. He's played overseas. He's got international experience. He's someone that, immediately, can come in and have an impact, because he knows the league well."

Cooper is in his ninth season in MLS and has also played in Germany with 1860 Munich.
