Beckham to be offered Miami stadium site near Marlins Park

MIAMI -- The Miami-Dade County Commission has agreed to offer football star David Beckham a site near Marlins Park for a Major League Soccer stadium.

Commissioners agreed on Tuesday on a resolution calling for Mayor Carlos Gimenez or his designee to negotiate or finalize a deal with Beckham. Beckham's efforts to get Miami waterfront property for the stadium failed last summer.

The latest offer is a county-owned parcel on the west side of Marlins Park that has been generally earmarked for football fields.

Beckham's group had earlier said they weren't interested if they couldn't have a stadium in downtown Miami.

A spokesman for the mayor's office says the county has previously discussed possible sites with Beckham and his partners, including the Marlins Park site, but he isn't sure where they stand now.
