Mexican international Erick "El Cubo" Torres will remain in Major League Soccer, joining the Houston Dynamo as a designated player on a five-year deal, the club announced on Tuesday night.
Torres, 21, starred for Chivas USA last season while on loan from the now-defunct MLS team's Mexican parent club, Chivas Guadalajara. After that loan expired this month, MLS signed Torres to a permanent deal and offered his contract to all 20 clubs.
The Dynamo were the only team to accept the terms of the Torres' contract, which includes a six-month loan back to Chivas Guadalajara for the upcoming Liga MX Clausura season.
"I'm extremely excited to be joining the Houston Dynamo. It's one of the premier clubs in MLS and a place where I really wanted to sign," Torres said in a statement. "I can't wait to join my teammates in Houston and continue their success on the field."
Torres scored 15 goals in 29 games for Chivas USA in 2014, which tied him for seventh place in the league. He is the highest-scoring Mexican-born player in MLS history with 22 goals.
"We are delighted to sign a such a talented young player with the scope and potential to improve further," Dynamo coach Owen Coyle said in a statement. "For me, he is an outstanding player who does the toughest thing in soccer with ease, and that is to score goals. I look forward to working with him and helping to make him even better."
Torres debuted for the Mexican national team debut against Bolivia in September. He scored his first El Tri goal against Panama in October.
