Robbie Keane, Obafemi Martins, Lee Nguyen named MLS MVP finalists

Los Angeles Galaxy's Robbie Keane, Seattle's Obafemi Martins, and New England's Lee Nguyen were named as the three MLS 2014 MVP awards finalists by the league on Thursday with the winner slated to be revealed on Dec. 3.

For the first time since 2010, all three MVP finalists are on teams still alive in the MLS playoffs.

The finalists were selected from a panel of voters that included current MLS players, MLS coaches and front office staff as well as media.

Irish forward Keane has had 19 goals and 14 assists in 29 Galaxy appearances this season as Los Angeles heads into semifinals vs. Seattle. Martins, who last month signed a multi-year contract extension with the Sounders, has scored 17 goals and assisted on 13 others in league play while helping the Sounders capture both the Supporters' Shield and US Open Cup title.

Nguyen, who rejoined the Revolution last week after playing for the United States vs. Colombia in London, has scored 18 goals in 32 games this season. New England begins its Eastern Conference Championship series against New York on Sunday.

Tesho Akindele (FC Dallas), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United) and Harry Shipp (Chicago Fire) were named Rookie of the Year finalists, with the winner set to be named on Nov. 24.

Gregg Berhalter (Columbus Crew SC), Ben Olsen (D.C. United) and Sigi Schmid (Seattle Sounders) were named Coach of the Year finalists.
