Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Sacramento to post bids for MLS expansion team

Three cities -- Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Sacramento -- are set to present their bids as Major League Soccer expansion teams on Thursday in New York, according to MLSsoccer.com.

MLS said on Wednesday that groups from the three cities will make the presentations at MLS headquarters as the league sets its sights on having 24 teams by the end of this decade.

In addition to the 18 existing teams, New York City FC and Orlando City debut in 2015, while new clubs in Los Angeles and Atlanta are slated to launch in 2017.

A 23rd team is reserved for David Beckham's group in Miami, though that deal has not officially been completed while the owners seek a site to build a stadium.

That would potentially leave one spot available in the league for Las Vegas, Minneapolis or Sacramento.

Further MLS expansion is expected to be on the agenda at the league's board of governors meeting, set for Dec. 6.
