MLS Power Rankings: Josef Martínez keeps Atlanta United out in front, D.C. United joins the playoff race

1. Atlanta United

Record: 15W-6D-4L
Week 24 ranking: 1

Any reason to demote United from their long-held position atop the MLS Power Rankings melted with a 3-1 win over Columbus on Sunday. Josef Martínez scored his 27th goal of the year in the victory, joining Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips as the league's all-time single-season record holders. How far the Venezuelan can go beyond this mark is anyone's guess.

2. New York Red Bulls

Record: 15-3-6
Week 24 ranking: 2

Tyler Adams showed his talent again in a 2-2 comeback road draw for the Red Bulls against Vancouver on Saturday. The 19-year old midfielder played the ball that set Daniel Royer's first goal, then provided the set-piece service on the second.

3. FC Dallas

Record: 13-6-5
Week 24 ranking: 6

Put any questions of a late-summer swoon for FC Dallas to rest -- for now. The 2-0 win over Minnesota at Toyota Stadium on Saturday not only kept the Texans in first place in the West, it was Oscar Pareja's 100th victory as an MLS head coach.

4. New York City FC

Record: 14-5-6
Week 24 ranking: 3

The City side is sliding a bit, with Saturday's humbling loss to Philadelphia the latest in a four-game run of a win, two losses and a draw. The big question in the Bronx is whether Domenec Torrent has a grip on how to fix what ails NYCFC.

5. Sporting Kansas City

Record: 12-6-6
Week 24 ranking: 7

Sporting closed June with a loss, then went winless in July. In August, Peter Vermes' side is 3-0-0, the latest victory an emphatic 3-0 win over Portland. The defense is getting it done, having not given up a goal during the winning streak.

Record: 12-6-7
Week 24 ranking: 9

The schedule hasn't been kind to the expansion side, who struggled for about a month. Wednesday's 2-0 win over RSL (with new addition Christian Ramirez getting both goals) and a 2-0 win on Sunday against Colorado rights the ship nicely.

7. Seattle Sounders FC

Record: 10-5-9
Week 24 ranking: 8

The Sounders took full advantage of a visit from a weak Galaxy team in a 5-0 win on Saturday. That makes six wins in a row for Seattle, who is now just two points back of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

8. Portland Timbers

Record: 10-7-6
Week 24 ranking: 4

In just his first year, Portland boss Giovanni Savarese has experienced the whiplash nature of coaching in MLS. Following a nearly four-month unbeaten run, the Timbers are now on a three-game losing streak where they've been outscored 9-2.

9. Columbus Crew SC

Record: 11-6-8
Week 24 ranking: 5

A call that didn't go the Crew's way might have changed the game, but Columbus can only tip a cap in the direction of an Atlanta side that is lethal on the break. The Crew will be back.

10. Vancouver Whitecaps

Record: 9-7-9
Week 24 ranking: 10

The Caps followed up last week's impressive win in Portland with a somewhat disappointing home draw against the Red Bulls on Saturday. Vancouver needed Stefan Marinovic's heroics and a pair of goals from defender Kendall Waston to salvage a point.

11. Philadelphia Union

Record: 10-3-11
Week 24 ranking: 15

The Union look to be executing a dramatic turnaround. The 2-0 win over NYCFC felt like a statement, with Philadelphia controlling the game against an MLS Cup contender. Cory Burke is a big part of it, scoring four goals in the last five games.

12. LA Galaxy

Record: 10-7-9
Week 24 ranking: 11

The talk coming out of the Galaxy's humiliating 5-0 defeat on Saturday against Seattle centered on Zlatan Ibrahimovic's no-show. The striker's decision was amplified because LA was missing a number of other key players for the weekend.

13. D.C. United

Record: 7-6-9
Week 24 ranking: 18

Three games, seven days, nine points. United took care of New England on Sunday night to complete a fantastic week and launch themselves into the playoff race. Luciano Acosta has benefited greatly from Wayne Rooney's arrival in the nation's capital.

14. Real Salt Lake

Record: 11-5-10
Week 24 ranking: 17

A win and a loss in a double-game week for RSL means a small step taken toward the playoffs. Credit Mike Petke and his staff for managing a difficult road trip and emerging with three points.

15. Montreal Impact

Record: 10-3-13
Week 24 ranking: 16

The Impact did themselves a favor by taking care of a woeful and checked-out Fire team in a 2-1 win at Stade Saputo on Saturday. Daniel Lovitz scored his first career goal and helped hold Chicago to the lone goal.

16. Houston Dynamo

Record: 7-6-11
Week 24 ranking: 12

The Dynamo have faded from orange to creamsicle with a seven-game winless run that includes a current five-game losing streak. Losing at home to a Western rival like RSL is the kind of result that closes the door on a playoff campaign.

17. Toronto FC

Record: 6-6-12
Week 24 ranking: 13

The Reds need to win, no matter where they play. That makes Saturday's 1-1 draw with San Jose a crushing disappointment with time running out in the regular season. Chris Mavinga and Jozy Altidore's suspensions handcuffed Greg Vanney for the trip west.

18. Minnesota United

Record: 9-2-14
Week 24 ranking: 14

The Loons couldn't overcome the absence of Darwin Quintero on the road in Frisco, where a long weather delay didn't help their chances on the way to a 2-0 loss. Any dreams of the playoffs are getting long for Minnesota.

19. Colorado Rapids

Record: 6-6-13
Week 24 ranking: 20

One point from two games in LA this week for the Rapids. Anthony Hudson's project has taken strides in recent weeks, but the talent of LAFC on Sunday was too much to overcome as Colorado closed out the trip to the West Coast with a loss.

20. New England Revolution

Record: 7-8-9
Week 24 ranking: 19

The Revs fell to DC United 2-0 on Sunday night and are now winless since June. Dropping five out of their last six has pushed them out of the playoff spot with DC nipping on their heels. Brad Friedel's job isn't going to get easier next week at red-hot Philadelphia.

21. Orlando City

Record: 7-2-15
Week 24 ranking: 21

No game this weekend for James O'Connor and Orlando.

22. San Jose Earthquakes

Record: 3-8-13
Week 24 ranking: 23

Single points at home won't do much for the Quakes in terms of the standings, but Saturday's draw with TFC will still feel good. Chris Wondolowski crept closer toward the MLS career goal-scoring record in the draw.

23. Chicago Fire

Record: 6-5-15
Week 24 ranking: 22

The Fire's complete collapse continued this week with a disheartening loss in Montreal. Bastian Schweinsteiger can't carry the team himself, especially as his age begins to show in obvious ways.
