Free agent goalkeeper Rene Adler completes move to Mainz

Mainz have signed former Germany international goalkeeper Rene Adler on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old was a free agent after opting to end his five-year stay with fellow Bundesliga club Hamburg.

"The change to Mainz is for me the right step at the right time, the quiet and concentrated atmosphere in the club fits me," Adler told Mainz's official website. "I have the feeling that something exciting can arise here.

"I am glad that we could reach agreement so quickly and am already looking forward to a new chapter in my career. "

Adler was capped 12 times by his country between 2008 and 2013 and was a member of the Germany squad which finished runners-up at Euro 2008.

He began his career at Bayer Leverkusen before switching to Hamburg in 2012.

Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroeder said: "Rene Adler has been one of the most influential players in the Bundesliga and one of the most powerful goalkeepers in Germany for many years, both of which make him a very exciting player for Mainz.

"We quickly found a very good relationship with each other. He is a highly-motivated professional and we are very pleased that he is wearing our jersey."
