On Sunday, sporting director Christian Heidel confirmed at a news conference that Tuchel had asked the club to cancel his contract, which runs until 2015, after an impressive five years at the helm.

The 40-year-old, who established Mainz in the Bundesliga and led the club into next season's Europa League, must now reach an agreement over the final year of his deal, with Heidel telling kicker on Thursday: "Nothing has been signed yet, but we hope to solve it this week."

Despite the ongoing negotiations over Tuchel's exit, Mainz have moved to appoint Nordsjaelland boss Hjulmand as his successor. The Dane will join on a three-year contract from July.

"He has a very high level of professional expertise," Heidel told the club's official website. "He is a meticulous coach and an advocate of an attacking football style. Moreover, he has excellent reputation for developing young players in his home country. I was surprised how perfectly the club's philosophy matches my own."
