Lyon target return to days of winning Ligue 1 after beating Monaco to second

Lyon's players backed the club to win the Ligue 1 title next season after they secured Champions League football with a thumping win over Monaco.

It was billed as a winners-take-all clash between the sides in second and third and that only ever looked like being Lyon once Rachid Ghezzal gave them the lead in the third minute.

They were four up after 35 minutes, with a hat trick from Alexandre Lacazette and two from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa earning them a crushing 6-1 victory.

They now lead their rivals by three points with one game left, and a far superior goal difference means they cannot be caught for second place and a spot in the Champions League group stage.

Lyon were 10 points behind Monaco only two months ago but have surged up the table, generating excitement about what they may be able to achieve next season.

Full-back Christophe Jallet feels the move to Parc OL in January was crucial.

He told the club website: "We have come so far when you look at two or three months back.

"We knew we could reverse our form with a strong mindset and we found the quality. It is the achievement of a talented group tonight and everyone was in a good state of mind.

"Whether tonight or on another night, we feel invincible here. There is a special atmosphere.

"We are dreaming of becoming champions in this new stadium and we always knew we could atone for our faults and shortcomings.

"Next year, that kind of self-belief could help us to move mountains."

Midfielder Clement Grenier hailed it as a throwback to the days when Lyon were serial winners of the Ligue 1 title.

He said: "We showed we have one of the best teams in the championship. We will be in first position next year. We used to play games like that."

Fellow midfielder Maxime Gonalons added: "It's amazing. It was the perfect match.

"We had to show heart to make up for the first part of the season and we can be proud because everyone worked very hard.

"We were prepared and we knew that by continuing to play like that, we could achieve this. This competition is magical to play in."

In contrast, it was a horrible evening for Monaco, who had looked safe in second but lost form at the worst moment.

They had Lacina Traore sent off after only 23 minutes and now face a fight to hold onto third place.

Coach Leonardo Jardim told the club website: "We conceded two goals from Lyon's first two attacks. The team always tried to respond. We conceded a red card and after that it was over.

"We did not present a good image of Monaco. It was a tough night.

"But we must act quickly. We need to be strong against Montpellier next Saturday. We must qualify for the Champions League [playoff round] by finishing in third place."
