Liverpool's Klopp feels 'relief' after breaking finals losing streak

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was happy to finally break an unlucky streak and win the Champions League after his club's 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

An early Mohamed Salah penalty and a late strike by Divock Origi gave Liverpool the win in Saturday's all-English final as Klopp finally got his hands on Europe's biggest prize.

Before Saturday's win in Madrid, Klopp had lost six straight finals appearances. He guided Liverpool to last season's Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid, and finished runner-up in the competition with Borussia Dortmund in 2013.

He also came out on the losing side in two German Cup finals, as well as a Europa League and League Cup final with Liverpool.

"I feel mostly relief to be honest, for my family actually," Klopp told reporters at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid.

"We always go on holiday the last six times, with a silver medal, it didn't feel too cool. It's different this year, it's for them.

"[My players and I] were pretty much crying on the pitch because it was so emotional, so big. I know how Tottenham feels in the moment better than anyone else in the world.

Klopp said Liverpool, who took the battle for the Premier League title against Manchester City to the final match of the season before eventually coming up short by one point, were just getting started.

"It is important that people don't ask us all the time about not winning," Klopp said.

"We want to win things too, 100 percent, this is only the start for this group. They have their best years ahead of them.

"I have a lot of silver medals and now I have a gold one, but I'm really happy for other people.

"We have a good mix of talent and experienced players and today was just about enjoying it and we did."

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold said: "I am just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come true.

"It took a while, it is important for our development and improvement, This little mark helps a lot, now we can carry on. The owners never put pressure on us.

"It is hard to put into words. The season we have had, we deserved it more than any other team. We have done something special, we dominated the game.

"We will not look back and think it was sluggish game, we will see we are European champions.
