Mexico's Jonathan Gonzalez blocked from U20 World Cup by Monterrey - source

Monterrey has denied Jonathan Gonzalez permission to join the Mexico Under-20 squad for the upcoming World Cup in Poland, a source has told ESPN's David Faitelson.

The former United States youth international midfielder switched to Mexico in early 2018 and was set to be an integral part of El Tri's midfield at the U20 World Cup, but now appears set to miss out.

The 20-year-old, who has already earned two senior caps in his young career, has been in and out of the Monterrey team this season and is unlikely to be included in Mexico's Gold Cup squad this summer.

Real Betis winger Diego Lainez will be included in the U20 squad, with Jose Juan Macias -- the top Mexico-born goalscorer in Liga MX this season -- also set to feature, according to the source.

Mexico kicks off its U20 World Cup campaign against Italy on May 23 and will also face Japan and Ecuador in Group B of the tournament.
