BIRKENHEAD, England -- Steven Gerrard believes his Liverpool under-19s side dominated rivals Manchester United in Wednesday's UEFA Youth League round-of-16 tie.
Goals from Ben Woodburn and second-half substitute Rafael Camacho saw Gerrard's side earn a victory at Prenton Park against a United team managed by Nicky Butt -- a former England teammate of Gerrard.
The victory sets up another all-English affair in the prestigious youth tournament as Liverpool will play Manchester City in the quarterfinals, with the tie set to be played in the middle of March.
"All in all, I think we have dominated them, dominated Manchester United today, and we have some very young players in the team so that was the pleasing thing for me," Gerrard told a postmatch news conference.
"We killed them for 35 minutes and we should have got that second goal and we could have made the second half a lot easier for ourselves. But Rafa coming on and creating that bit of magic certainly helped the team breathe towards the end of the game because we knew it was going to get tough."
Despite entering 2018 unbeaten in competitive matches, Gerrard headed into the United game on a four-game losing run as a coach.
"The lads have had a tough month and so have the staff," Gerrard said. "I think it's important that we enjoy this win first. It's a big performance and the lads need to enjoy this performance and enjoy that taste of winning again because it's been a while.
"Playing United, a big rival, comes with extra pressure, extra responsibility that comes with the game. It's more of a buzz, it's more excitement.
"Coming up against an old teammate of mine and the rivalry that's gone on for many, many years, of course it makes the tie a bit more juicy. There's a little bit more pressure and edge around it.
"That's why I'm sitting here, because I want that. I want that challenge. The reason I want that challenge is because I can't go and find it myself as a player anymore, so the next best thing is coaching."
