Liverpool defeat Man United, advance to quarterfinals of UEFA Youth League

BIRKENHEAD, England -- Steven Gerrard's Liverpool under-19s beat Manchester United on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Youth League.

Goals from Ben Woodburn and Rafael Camacho at Prenton Park saw Liverpool beat a United side managed by Nicky Butt -- a former England teammate of Gerrard -- in the round of 16 stage of the youth tournament.

The win means Gerrard, who became Liverpool's U18s coach at the start of the season, has ended a recent four-game losing run as a manager and sets up a meeting with Manchester City in the next round.

Woodburn, Liverpool's youngest goalscorer at first-team level, had featured in all of the UEFA Youth League group stage matches this season and was made available for Wednesday's tie by first-team boss Jurgen Klopp.

Meanwhile, Ethan Hamilton and Angel Gomes both started for United after they were substitutes in the first team's victory at Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Woodburn, who has made just one senior appearance this season, gave Liverpool a 10th-minute lead at the home of National League side Tranmere Rovers when he headed in Neco Williams' cross.

United had chances of their own, particularly when Tahith Chong hit the crossbar in the 39th minute, but they were ultimately denied any hope of an encounter with their local rivals when second-half substitute Camacho netted from long range 13 minutes from time.

Liverpool now face a trip to the City Football Academy in the middle of March for a one-legged quarterfinal clash.
