Liverpool's Rhian Brewster to undergo further assessments on ankle injury

Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster has a high ankle sprain and will undergo further assessments.

Brewster was carried off on a stretcher and required oxygen during Liverpool Under-23s' match with Manchester City on Friday after landing awkwardly in first-half stoppage time.

The 17-year-old was assessed in hospital following the injury and Liverpool confirmed on Monday that the striker did not break a bone.

"Rhian Brewster has suffered a high ankle sprain and will undergo further assessments on the injury later this week," the Merseyside club said.

"Brewster has an initial diagnosis of ligament damage and further tests will be conducted this week to determine the full extent of his injury."

U23s manager Neil Critchley feared the worst regarding Brewster's injury immediately after his side's 3-2 defeat.

"It's not looking good," Critchley told the club's website. "He fell awkwardly and it's down towards the bottom near his ankle. "He will be going to hospital. I don't want to speculate too much but he's in a lot of pain and hopefully it's not as bad as it looks, but we fear the worst a little bit at the moment."
