Liverpool's U23 side thrash Everton Premier League 2 Merseyside derby

BIRKENHEAD -- Liverpool Under-23s extended their lead over Everton at the top of the Premier League 2 table to five points with a 4-0 win over their local rivals on Saturday night.

Goals from Herbie Kane, Corey Whelan, Yan Dhanda and a superb strike from England's U17s World Cup hero Rhian Brewster at Prenton Park ensured Liverpool stayed ahead of the Blues in the league standings.

The match took place just a few hours after both first team's had played, with the fixture scheduled to accommodate Liverpool's trip to Sevilla on Tuesday as part of the UEFA Youth League.

Everton, managed by Francis Jeffers while usual coach David Unsworth temporarily takes charge of the senior squad, are the current champions of the U23 league, but find themselves trailing Neil Critchley's side from second place this season.

Harry Wilson provided the assists for the opening two goals, firstly delivering a cut-back for Kane to convert from close range before sending in a corner kick that Whelan nodded in at the pack post.

Shortly after the half-time break, Brewster scored a perfectly-executed volley off Kane's cross-field pass to put the game beyond any doubt, with second-half substitute Dhanda then netting an excellent individual goal.

Having not made the matchday squad for the first team's 3-0 win over Southampton, Danny Ings and Jon Flanagan both played 90 minutes for Liverpool.
