LIVERPOOL -- Two-time Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish told ESPN FC that it is difficult to secure "top players" in the January transfer window, but believes clubs should go and make improvements if possible.
In comments published in Raphael Honigstein's book on Jurgen Klopp, Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said it was an "anomaly" if clubs were able to sign players in January after failed attempts to strengthen Liverpool's squad in the winter of the 2016-17 campaign.
Dalglish feels there is no "harm" in looking for ways to improve during January, but feels players should not be bought for the sake of it.
"There's not too many top players that come available in January. There are some," he told ESPN FC on Wednesday evening.
"But it doesn't necessarily need to be a top player. If you think he's better than what you've got and he's available then you go and get him.
"The window is coming up. There'll be some activity. As usual, it'll probably be the last two days where it's all crammed in.
"There's no harm in not doing business in January -- if you're happy with what you've got then just leave it.
"I don't think it's important about the money that you spend. I think it's important who you buy."
During his second stint as Liverpool manager, Dalglish was part of one of the most extraordinary January transfer windows when, in 2011, the Merseyside club signed Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll on deadline day to replace the departing Fernando Torres.
The Scot is unsure whether similar levels of transfer activity will ever happen again partway through a season, but admits a number of managerial changes in the Premier League could start a chain reaction this time around.
"I don't know," Dalglish responded when asked if football will ever witness a deadline day as dramatic as Liverpool's in 2011. "Something always happens to spiral it all off.
"Luis came in early doors and Andy wasn't too far after him. I suppose Andy only came in because Fernando was gone.
"[Dimitar] Berbatov went to Manchester United with a few minutes to spare in one transfer window.
"There is some activity but I don't know how much will be happening this year. There's been a few managerial changes, so maybe that will spark a few transfers. There might not be too many big ones."
Dalglish was speaking to media at the U.K. premiere of a feature film documenting his life and footballing career.
The movie comes just a matter of weeks after Liverpool officially unveiled the Kenny Dalglish Stand at Anfield.
"It's my fault I suppose and so is my profession as a footballer," he said. "With the help of hundreds of others, we had a wee bit of success.
"I suppose that elevates things to places where people make decisions to name the stand after us.
"It's a huge honour and privilege to have anything at Liverpool named after us. They're spoilt for choice with all the people that have done fantastic service for the club.
"The movie just seemed like something to put in and [have it] as something for the kids that they can see later on in their lives.
"It has all come a wee bit quick -- one on top of the other. But if it's going to come then it's better to come quickly and then you can relax and enjoy yourself."
