Georginio Wijnaldum doubtful for West Ham trip; Philippe Coutinho out

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Georginio Wijnaldum is a doubt for Liverpool's trip to West Ham United with an ankle injury and expects Philippe Coutinho to miss the encounter at the London Stadium.

Wijnaldum was forced off after 17 minutes in Liverpool's 3-0 win over Maribor in the Champions League on Wednesday, while Coutinho sat out a second game in a row with an adductor problem.

Meanwhile, Dejan Lovren, who missed the victories over Huddersfield Town and Maribor with a thigh problem, will have his fitness assessed to determine whether he can feature in the Premier League clash on Saturday evening.

"At half-time I asked immediately and the ankle was already swollen," Klopp said of Wijnaldum's injury. "It's probably not a good sign.

"We saw a kick in the game and didn't think it was too serious. Then it was swollen. We're not sure if he twisted it or not. For sure, we have to make a scan."

On the fitness of Coutinho and Lovren, the Liverpool manager added: "I would say it will be really close. I don't think Phil is able to play, but with Dejan we have to see.

"It is different with Dejan. It's not the same problem Phil has and he is not out for that long a time, but Gini [Wijnaldum] is out so maybe there will be a wonder or something like this and Phil is in. But I don't think in the moment that he can play."

As a result of Coutinho's absence, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first Anfield start for Liverpool on Wednesday night following his summer move from Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain played the entire 90 minutes in midweek, and Klopp feels a start in the league is on its way for the England international.

He said: "If you start a Champions League game, you should not be far away from starting a Premier League game, I would say.

"It was good. He offered a lot in the first half but we did not use it often enough. He showed a lot and I loved his counter-pressing situations.

"I'm not sure he did this a lot of times in his life already, so it is really nice to see that. For players with speed, it is not too easy in a game like this but I saw a lot of good things of him and I am fine with the performance, of course."
